We suggest you read the motivating story of Filipe Castro Matos (Filipe Castro Matos), who taught himself to wake up at 4:30 in the morning for 21 days.
On April 2, I threw myself a new challenge. The task was simple: on 21 working days I had to wake up at 4:30 in the morning. I was already used to waking up early (at 6 am almost every day), but this time I wanted to go even further. I wanted to test myself and find out my limit.
And at the same time I wanted to share my achievements with other people so that they could follow my example. I also wanted to refute some of the preconceived false notions that society blindly follows.
I decided to follow this regime only on working days, because weekends and holidays are a separate conversation. Of course, I do not have time to do some things on weekdays, so I have to transfer them on Saturday and Sunday, but basically the weekend is time for fun and night walks.
Yes, of course, I could have followed this regime every day, but in that case I would have violated my life balance. Since I planned to continue to wake up as early and after 21 days, it would turn into a real torture, not an advantage.
Why exactly 21 days? Well, I relied on the old as the world idea of Dr. Maxwell Moltz, who argues that in order to form new habits, you need exactly 21 days. I do not know if it really works, I just needed to set a goal.
I have one rule that I try to adhere to: always set yourself a specific goal, because only in this way you will be able to understand whether it was possible or not to achieve what you wanted.
What was the ultimate goal of all this? Increase in productivity, I wanted to take from each day to the maximum. I always think about how to improve my work, how to improve my life, and I like to think about all the details and take measures that will help me achieve what I want.
I always knew that I was a lark, and my goal was to get up early every morning and see if it would increase my productivity.
So, what did I find out during this time? A LOT OF EVERYTHING.
1. If you want to change something in your life, it is very important that throughout the trip you have support from
This will help you not to get out of the way, when you have (and it will certainly appear), the desire to quit everything. In my case, I decided to share my observations with friends and acquaintances on Facebook. I knew that I needed to tell someone about this, because this is an additional incentive to move towards the goal.
But when people learn about your new habit, they will be interested, they will ask questions. The most useful thing is that you will be afraid to show your weakness, and that alone is enough to not quit what you started. Moreover, I wanted to light someone else with my idea. Of course, I knew that if I did not succeed, it would not be a tragedy, but the thought that my example could be followed by other people helped me move on.
2. People are attentive to details
Some people consider such early awakenings not quite normal, so I had to actively defend my position in the comments. People were worried about me. People asked a lot of questions. And while people believed that they themselves can never accustom themselves to get up as early.
I conducted long and sensible conversations with people who read my posts, and I was grateful to all who responded. These people made me think about many things, and this article, which you are now reading, largely came about thanks to these conversations.
3. People do not want to wake up earlier, because they think that because of this they will sleep less
At the very beginning, many people were really worried about me. Most of the questions asked were reduced to one: when do I sleep? Of course, I planned everything in advance.
I knew very well how long it took my body to get enough sleep. And since I changed the time of my awakening, it was also necessary to change the time in which I would go to bed. For me it was easy. To sleep, I need 6-7 hours, and I was not going to sleep less.
So if it’s 9:30 or 10:00 pm, then I know that it’s time for me to go to bed. To my surprise, most people who asked me when I sleep, in fact, slept much less than I did. And I began to get enough sleep much better than before.
4. Eliminate the obstacles that will meet you on the way.
People like to say that it is impossible to do this or that. Yes, of course, there are certain circumstances that can become an obstacle. But I believe that many people are simply lazy and do not want to make extra efforts to improve their lives. They just go with the flow, not really thinking about their real capabilities.
Yes, maybe it’s easy for me to talk, because I had the right conditions: I’m not married, I have no children, my life belongs to me. But, on the other hand, much depended on my desire and motivation.
If I lived with my parents, it would be much more difficult to do this, because I would have to reckon with my family, with their habits and the rhythm of life. So, I started this way, making sure beforehand that nothing hinders me.
Think about everything that prevents you from achieving the desired goal.
This applies not only to the desire to wake up earlier, but also to the desire to quit, start going to the gym or, say, eat more fruits and vegetables. How to get rid of all the obstacles that prevent you from reaching the goal?
In my case, I knew that I would need the following: complete independence; the opportunity to fall asleep when I want; the opportunity not to wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, realizing that I have a lot of unfinished business; the opportunity to work anywhere and anytime … Fortunately, I had it all.
I usually work in start-ups, which means that I have a free and flexible schedule, which is why I can start working at 4:30 in the morning. This schedule allows me to return home sooner. In addition, no one is dependent on me, and I do not depend on anyone. And, in spite of the fact that seven other people live with me in one house, it was easy for me to fall asleep so early.
5. Your physical condition will greatly help you
Speaking of a dream, I was very lucky. I fall asleep very quickly (on average, it takes me 5 minutes). Good sleep (I wake up rarely at night). There are no problems with awakening: I get up right away on the alarm signal.
Of course, this is a consequence of my way of life: I eat well, I go in for sports every day, in my life there are no permanent and global worries. And I believe that most people too can wake up earlier if they decide to change their way of life.
All changes start with small things, but after a few weeks or months you realize the benefits of all these small changes.
6. Forget the phrase “Another 10 minutes”
Many of us sin this: they do not stand up immediately on the alarm signal, but rearrange it for another 10 minutes later. Fortunately, I rarely did this, but now I’m finally convinced of the futility of this lesson.
If you want to wake up at a certain time, then, please, forget about this eternal “well 10 more minutes”. This will seriously affect your day: research proves that you will not get enough sleep over these 10 minutes, moreover, you will feel more tired, and this will have a most negative impact on your affairs.
7. I really like to sleep, but my body needs only 6-7 hours to sleep
After 6-7 hours of sleep, I can not sleep anymore, but just tossing and turning in bed. It is better to get up and do something interesting and useful. In the next world I’ll sleep.
8. There is more time to work
After I started to wake up at 4:30 in the morning, I had extra 2 hours that I could devote to work. How? As I said above, I’m still a lark and after 6 pm I can not do anything particularly useful, my productivity is falling in the second half of the day.
So these two evening hours, which I spent uselessly surfing on the Internet, I postponed in the morning and could dedicate them to work. Now I could finish the work earlier and rest when I needed it.
9. I had time to rake mail
As a rule, during these 2 hours I manage to answer all emails and schedule my entire day. To see the number zero in front of the Inbox folder, when the time is only 6:30 in the morning, it’s wonderful. What is most gratifying is that very few people can respond to messages at such an early hour. This is especially true of Facebook, this is the most ill-fated enemy of our time. Message for the message, we can hang in the correspondence with some person for the whole day.
And if you think carefully, you can notice that most people do not need immediate answers to all their questions, and nothing bad will happen if you answer the letters tomorrow.
10. There was more time for training
I went to the gym before I decided to get up early. But since I started to wake up at 4:30 in the morning, I decided to add one more workout per week. Before that, I had enough training and three times a week, but now this is not enough: I need four or five workouts.
My early wakes help me in this: I do not come to the training tired, as it used to be before. Plus, in the hall I go with a sense of accomplishment – I have already worked 2 hours.
11. A new view of the world
My early awakenings allowed me to notice those details in the world around me, which I almost never noticed before.
Go for a run or walk until the sun has not yet risen – all this was impossible before, when I lived on a standard schedule.
12. And, of course, we need willpower to rebuild our regime of the day
If you do not have the willpower, then it is more than likely that you will surrender. Train your willpower, learn to achieve what you want.
In the end, if you really want, then no one will be able to stop you!
