Mnemonics, or How to Conquer Your Memory

We love and respect the personal experience of our readers. For example, today we publish a fresh post sent Artyom Smirnov, which is excellent mastered the skill of memorization and hurried to share this knowledge with all of us.

I started to get involved in mnemotechnics almost two years ago and managed to read quite a few books on this topic. And none of them gave me sufficient information about this science (except one, about which a little later). And all for one reason: the authors wanted to earn as much money as possible. Typically, the authors of these books hold special courses, which really (I would like to believe) explain to people what mnemonics is and what it eats, rather than pouring water.

In the end it turns out like this: many words, little really useful information. Basically – a set of words about what kind of mnemonics is a useful thing, calculations from scientific encyclopedias, showing the incredible possibilities of the human brain. This is completely unacceptable, in my opinion. All I want is to try to explain to you as much as possible how to actually learn the memorization skill.

What is the method

All you need to know is that the method is based on creating images in your mind. You take information that you need to remember, and transform it into an image through association. A person has an excellent associative memory, and mnemonics use this to the fullest.

Thus, in order to learn to remember, you need to imagine different things in your imagination.

Now just try to remember the following list of products as you usually remember any information:

  • toilet paper;
  • Toothbrush;
  • soap;
  • processed cheese;
  • apples;
  • lemon;
  • butter;
  • mayonnaise;
  • salad;
  • walnuts.

Usually people remember up to 7 products, but even if you remember everything, I’m sure you will forget the entire list after 5 minutes.

Now I will try to explain to you how to memorize the list so that you do not forget it for at least a couple of days.

The more unusual the situation you create, the stronger it crashes into your brain.

I repeat, the image is at the head of everything. If you know how to create an image of an object in your head, then you are already halfway to success. Just try to imagine what a roll of toilet paper looks like. Then imagine a toothbrush and combine with a roll of toilet paper, that is, pierce a roll through the brush or put it on a roll. The bottom line is that the more unusual the situation you create, the more it crashes into your brain. Let the blood come from the roll, let him scream for help. But the main thing is to connect the two images.

Do the sameThe same with soap and melted cheese, with apples and lemon. For example, the mouse runs to the cheese and slips on a piece of soap, and the apple falls from the branch to the lemon. In principle, you can simply “pierce” one image to another, without thinking up any situations.

The trick with “puncturing” works almost always, it’s a fact.

Connecting images will take you a lot of time, but it’s normal. The result will amaze you – you will remember the entire list. That’s all the mnemonics.

I strongly advise you to look at exercises from a single book on mnemotechnics (the book that I mentioned at the beginning of the article). It’s called “Memory.” Training of memory and techniques of concentration of attention “, its author – R. Geysselkhart. There is also a lot of unnecessary information, especially at the end, but the exercises are very useful.

Once you complete all the exercises, be ready to create your own memory palace (or the hall of reason – to each his own).

What is the memory palace

This is your store of memorized images, “built” in the head. For example, the same list of products. After a couple of days you will forget it, being even a supermnemonic. Our goal is to keep this list for years to come. It is for this purpose that the palace of memory is created.

The method of creating a palace is similar to the method of Cicero: imagine your home and assign each image to an image. But there is one difference: you create the palace yourself, which means that this room will be at times more convenient for memorization, since you can use absolutely any objects.

The architecture of the palace can be completely different: from the den to the heavenly castle (in my case the palace plays a huge hall with a glass dome instead of a roof). The main thing is for you to be as comfortable as possible in your palace. In it, put together any information that you need and that you need to keep.

For example, take physics. Suppose you need to remember the formula q = CU.

First, we convert the information into an image. Let q – corn, CU – a bag. As a result, we got a bag containing corn.

Now we place the image in the palace. For this we create in our palace a regiment and call it “Physics”. For clarity next to the shelf hang on the thread head of Einstein (toy!) Or any object that causes you associations with the word “Physics”. And then we put the bag with the corn on the shelf.

Everything is very simple!

You do not need to know about how the brain works and how fast the charge moves between neurons, in order to learn the skill of remembering. You need to know only the technique of remembering. I hope that I managed to explain clearly enough the basics of mnemotechnics and I will be very happy if someone learns this method from this article. Thank you for your attention!
