On the last day of September, Apple released the final version of OS X El Capitan. The new OS at the time of release was more stable than the previous one, but, unfortunately, it does not lack any shortcomings. Some users encounter different problems after upgrading to OS X El Capitan. Here are the five most common problems and ways to solve them.
1. Errors in the upgrade process
After loading the installer OS X El Capitan from the Mac App Store and starting it, an error occurs that interrupts the installation process.
Most often this is due to the fault of currently running applications and processes that do not have support for OS X El Capitan. Another reason is the incompatibility of applications with System Integrity Protection.
In this case, the usual reboot or turn off / on will help. The running processes will be completed, and the installer must earn it. In more advanced cases, you will need to boot into a safe mode, which will run only vital OS components, without third-party extensions. To do this, hold the Shift key while loading the Mac.
2. Problems with Spotlight
Spotlight has even more integration with the system and web services, so sometimes after installation, there is an increased level of CPU utilization and resource consumption.
For normal operation, Spotlight should index all the data, and usually the damaged databases are created earlier.
Experienced makovodov leave their computer alone for an hour and a half immediately after installation, giving Spotlight and the system complete all the necessary actions. But, if this does not help, you will have to take more radical measures and remove the database manually. To do this, start the “Terminal” and alternately enter the following commands:
mdutil -ai off
mdutil -ai on
The first command will delete the existing database, and the second and third will disconnect and immediately start the service again. After that, Spotlight will create a new database and start indexing it. The process takes time, so you’ll have to wait.
3. Departures of Microsoft Office applications 2016
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook applications crash or crash.
Microsoft confirmed that because of the bug (or several) Office 2016 does not work on OS X El Capitan. And regardless of whether a clean installation or update was made.
At the moment, Microsoft is working on this problem, so there’s nothing left to do but use alternative solutions like Google Docs or Open Office.
4. Applications do not work correctly
One or more of your applications worked fine in OS X Yosemite, but after upgrading to OS X, El Capitan does not work correctly or does not work at all.
Actually, there can be a lot of reasons. The most common problem is the software incompatibility, limitations, or features of the OS.
The first step is to check the compatibility of a particular application with OS X El Capitan, visiting the official website of the developer. Most of them try to prepare a compatible version for the release of the new OS X, but sometimes it can take a while, especially with single-player developers and small companies. As a rule, you just have to wait for the new version of the application.
5. Problems with setting up a user account
During the installation or at its final stage, the user is requested to enter a password from his account, but the system does not accept it, even if the password is entered correctly.
The nature of this problem is not entirely understandable, since it arises at random from a small number of users. Somehow, the installation process is interrupted, and it can not be completed.
As you probably already guessed, there is no other way than to restart the installation. You need to restart the Mac or, better yet, turn it off and then on, and then restart the installation process.
In this list the most basic problems are collected, but, of course, there can be more of them. If you have encountered other problems and know their solution, be sure to write about it in the comments!
