Earlier I did not have Honor smartphones, and therefore the text will be torn off from other models of this manufacturer. Such a clean, uninspired look with periodic references to Google and its devices.
The smartphone seems quite impressive, especially if you have not yet got used to the trend to increase the average mobile size. The diagonal of the screen is 5.2 inches, dimensions – 143.2 × 71.9 × 8.5 mm, weight – 157 g.
This is not a phablet, but lovers of miniature technology, who did not discover the charms of large screens, it is better to look closer to something more compact.
Housing, materials, heating
Honor 7 is made of aluminum and is additionally coated with ceramic spraying. Available color options are “gray graphite” and “silver metallic”. From a technical point of view, the metal housing contributes to a better heat sink. The manufacturer also emphasizes the special arrangement of internal components and their processing with a special thermo compound, which even better diverts the heat and distributes it evenly.
How does all this work in practice? Acceptable. The eight-core processor and powerful graphics really need to be cooled, especially in games, and the Honor 7 does it. Overheating is not observed, while running 3D applications, the smartphone becomes warm, but not hot. Heating really seems uniform, it was not possible to allocate some very hot area.
Why ceramic coating? To make it more pleasant and convenient to hold in your hands. Under the plastic inserts, there are antennas from above and below, and it is problematic to perform these metal parts of the body because of physics.
For the user, this means a non-uniformity when touching the back cover. The transition from metal to plastic is noticeable for the skin of the hands and can cause some discomfort. Ceramics solves the problem. Feels like metal with such a spray looks like something more compatible with plastic. In addition, the smartphone becomes much less slippery. Very elegant and useful solution.
Plastic inserts are fitted with high accuracy. You can find a boundary between them and the lid, but not because of the joints, but because of your own net texture inserts. It looks normal and adds confidence when holding the device in your hands.
Loft, by the way, no. Absolutely. However, for a single case without a removable cover, this should be the norm. Cutouts for the microphone and speaker from the bottom are quite ordinary. They have nothing to say about them.
For all its elegance and refinement, the case of Honor 7 has one unpleasant cant in the performance of the camera. Its module protrudes from the hull, and it would be logical to somehow smooth it.
Engineers not only did not take into account this fact, but also made the camera frame from metal, rather angular and with sharp edges. If you put the smartphone on a table that is not too resistant to damage, press it slightly and hold it to one side, then a good such a scratch is likely to result.
The buttons of Honor 7 are also made of metal, rather compact and do not hang out.
Fingers are easy to find, and the only thing that you have to get used to is an additional button on the left side.
It runs user-selectable applications and functions that are most needed and supports three types of clicks: single, double and long. Total three applications with a single button.
Unfortunately, the engineers did not guess to put an additional action on the power button, as Google did in the sixth version of Android (double-pressing causes the camera), but you can be sure that in the subsequent updates of the software stuff this minor omission will be fixed. There are no physical system buttons (“Back”, “Home”, “Dispatcher”) in Honor 7, and this, perhaps, even for the better.
Fingerprinting from the hardware point of view
The last item worthy of mention is the fingerprint scanner, made in the form of a recessed rounded square on the back cover under the camera module. More details about its functions I’ll talk just below, and now about convenience.
There are still debates about which approach to the location of the scanner is more correct: Apple-style on the front panel under the screen or on the back cover? If we talk about the scenario in which a smartphone is in your hand, there is no difference. Just a matter of habit.
But now imagine that the smartphone is on the table and you need to get into it. Not taking in hand, because this is too much movement. With Android, this trick will not work, because the scanner is behind. It is necessary to recognize that the “apple” location of the scanner is not that much more convenient, but more versatile.
In the case of Honor 7, it is very easy to find the scanner with your finger. Deepening in the body is more than palpable, you will not get confused and do not miss.
Honor 7 has a 5.2-inch Gorilla Glass protected third-generation IPS-matrix with a resolution of 1 920 × 1,080 points (Full HD) at a density of 423 ppi. Talking about the quality of the picture on any modern smartphone – it’s pretty boring, because the screens have long been normal for everyone. Even excellent. There is also a good adjustable color rendition, and brightness, which is cleverly adapted to the situation thanks to the sensor and software, and the pixel density that is far beyond the possibilities of perception of the human eye.
Take any flagship in 2015, and it will have an excellent screen. Honor 7 is no exception. Much more important is that this screen can show, and then everything depends on the filling.
Performance, again about heating
In the smartphone is installed the eight-core HiSilicon Kirin 935 processor and quite decent graphics Mali-T628 MP4. At specialized technical sites it is fashionable to spread out detailed data and ratings from synthetic tests that do not tell ordinary users anything. How do you imagine 49 504 points in AnTuTu?
Using a smartphone, you do not see tsiferok, but you feel a certain feeling. So I want to talk about how Honor 7 works at the level of human perception. It seems to me that such an assessment is much more indicative.
If you still believe that Android is slowing down, just take in your hand any new Google Phone or Honor 7. Brakes? Frisi? There is not even a hint of instability or slowness in the work.
You start a long FullHD video and watch it with pleasure. You include the same FullHD movie, but already with YouTube and watch it with pleasure and without the slightest signs of slowing down. You can not talk about non-gaming applications at all. There is no actual program that a modern mobile processor would not pull. There are 3 GB of RAM on board Honor 7, and therefore even if several heavy processes are running in the background, even when switching between applications and screens and in any other situation, you will not notice a performance drop.
Among the current popular 3D-toys there was not one that would slow down on high graphics. At the same time, a slight heating appeared, as was mentioned at the beginning of the review. Perhaps, the producer himself is more to blame. On the page describing Honor 7, cooling is presented well, just like a revolutionary one. After reading about this, I imagined in my head literally a cold smartphone, even during the game. No, it is not cold, but, if compared with other aluminum representatives, the temperature is definitely lower.
The resolution of the main camera Honor 7 is 20 Mp, which definitely will please fans of large numbers. Protective glass, by the way, is sapphire.
If to speak about the resolution, for me the quality of the pictures was always more important, and also the camera’s ability to photograph well “out of the box”. If you are not a photographer, then deep digging in the settings is unlikely to appeal, and the result of changes to these settings may be unpredictable. More brains and preinstalled modes, a minimum of human actions – here it is, the ideal camera for a modern smartphone.
In Honor 7, the Sony IMX230 sensor is installed, and in combination with smart optimization software and a dual flash at the output, excellent shots are obtained.
Even better is that you do not have to do anything to get them, just push the button and watch the result. There is an opinion that the creators of Honor 7 tried to get into all modern trends at once, because the separate mode for shooting FOOD is already an edge.
With the video, everything is not so good. The smartphone can not record 4K-video. The maximum of its capabilities is FullHD at 30 frames per second. With such a stuffing and a camera, you could try and give something more. Oh, yes, one more minus for the lack of optical stabilization.
There is good news for girls and male representatives who like to take pictures of themselves. Honor 7 can safely be called selfifonom. The front camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels, the LED for face illumination and knows how to perform miracles in a literal sense.
The self improvement system is really cool. Once you create a series of pictures at different angles, expose the correction parameters (remove skin defects, color, eye size, lose weight / recover, etc.), and then the camera will automatically apply these settings for each selfie. If you wish, all these bells and whistles are turned off.
System, interface, applications, tools
At the time of writing the review, the current version of Android for Honor 7 is 5.0.2 Lollipop. Here I, like other fans of guglofonov, I can say: “Yeah, and with updates, you do not really.” In fact, the sixth version did not bring anything revolutionary to Android. Yes, a more convenient system of permissions is good, but in the case of Honor 7, it seems to me that something much more important has been done.
It’s about EMUI – a proprietary shell and a set of applications and tools that significantly expand the capabilities of the smartphone “out of the box”, and in general make the work with the device simply more convenient.
It is known that manufacturers modify pure Android and to promote their services, and because of the belief in the ability to make the operating system better than its creator.
It is noteworthy that in Honor 7 Android is fine-tuned very neatly. There are many innovations, and it is unlikely that you will want to remember a couple of dozen chips that could be listed here. I will try to convey the essence: every detail, every refinement and improvement of EMUI blends in harmoniously with the original logic of Android, does not create a sense of congestion or irrelevance and does not harm performance. In theory, you can lead to this kind of pure Android from Google, but for this you will need several hours to find the right applications and widgets.
Improvements and improvements are noticeable everywhere, starting with the system buttons, which can be customized here to your liking, and ending with useful applications for different tasks. You open the application manager to unload the superfluous, and you are shown the current load of RAM, thus prompting the actual situation with the load.
Voice search in Honor 7 allows you to not only search for the information you need, but also the smartphone itself. If the device is lost in the apartment, it is enough to say: “Dear Honor, where are you?” – and the smartphone will start to make sounds and vibrate, reporting its location.
If you reduce the overall impression of this modification of Android to one sentence, it will sound like this: “EMUI cool”.
Dactyloscopy from a programmatic point of view
Continuing the theme of the best study of EMUI, I want to give an example with a fingerprint scanner. In a googlephone it simply unlocks the smartphone. It would seem, but what else is needed? In Honor 7, using the fingerprint scanner, you can take a snapshot of the camera. Convenient, especially with vertical shooting. And even on the scaples on the scanner, you can assign certain actions.
The process of creating a print is better thought out here. Google does not tell you how to create a fingerprint correctly so that it can be recognized correctly. Honor 7 tells. In the process, you are given clues: “Touch this part, now this one.” As a result, the imprint is better, taken at any angle, and the subsequent unlocking occurs always without problems.
I think the problem is that Google creates good new things, but does not pay enough attention to details, does not polish them, does not bring them to the ideal state, does not really user-friendly. The creators of Honor 7 did it better.
The Honor 7 has a battery with a capacity of 3 000 mAh. The manufacturer’s website has information on some particularly high density of this battery, as well as firmware that allows you to save the charge without compromising performance and with minimal impact on the quality of the picture on the screen. What does this give in practice? Smartphone easily lives a day with fairly active use and still 30% of the charge. Two days – with a moderate. All this with a new battery, of course.
Do you have two SIM cards or a memory card?
In fact Honor 7 – dvuhsimochnik, but with one important refinement. The second slot divides the space with the slot for the memory card. On some specialized site I saw a comment from one user who managed to glue a memory card and a SIM card, forcing everything to work at the same time. But do you want to do this?
Quite a strange approach, although with a high probability it is only the consequences of the struggle for attractive dimensions.
All the current types of communication are available, including 4G cat 6, Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 4.1, USB 2.0 with OTG, GPS, GLONASS, and even IR, but no NFC. All this works stably and for several days of testing never fell off.

How to stop loving your smartphone
I admit, after the experience of using Honor 7, I’m no longer such a desperate fan of guglofonov. I put two devices next to each other and asked myself some simple questions. Why in many ways is my smartphone worse, but worth more? Is this the price for the opportunity to be the first to receive the newest version of Android? Something is wrong here, and it seems that the future is really behind the Chinese brands.
What can I say about Honor 7? He not only did not disappoint me, but frankly pleased me. I understood that I took in my hands even a Chinese, but still a top-end smartphone, and got exactly the experience that I expected from the corresponding class of equipment. With a price of 23 thousand rubles, this is perhaps one of the best options for those who want to update their mobile now.
