Today we will talk about the wires of the iPhone with a thin Lightning-connector. As you know, they serve not always long and happily. First of all, these wires have poor insulation. And when it comes to complete worthlessness in the fold, the whole wire ends. Unfortunately, the company’s devices from Cupertino have built-in protection against the use of non-original accessories (and we will deal with it in one of the following materials). Therefore, to save the wire is the main task. The key word in this article is the so-called “heat shrinkage”.
Unfortunately, I’m not an iOS fan, so I did not have the original (and even more spoiled) cable for charging and transferring data. In the nearest store there was a more useful universal USB cable with three connectors: microUSB and a pair of Lightning-connectors of the old and new version. The cable is full, but …
… it is not difficult to spoil it. Insulation on a fake cable is very similar in properties to the insulation of the original. So make a couple of cuts and simulate the usual damage to the cable is not difficult.
And now the repair has come. To do this, we will use the most common heat shrinkable tubing of a suitable diameter. By the way, this item is sold in any hardware stores, where they sell electric appliances, among others. You just need to tell the seller the word “heat shrink”.
For those who do not know: a heat-shrinkable tube is a thin-walled plastic tube with an internal diameter of 1 to 110 mm for insulation of wires and other electrical pieces. When heated (the required temperature is from 70 to 110 degrees), the tube is compressed approximately twice. After heating, the heat shrink tube completely repeats all the bends of the original wire. It sits as tightly as possible without a rupture – if you choose a diameter, it’s almost dead.
In this case, I got a hand like this, with a diameter of 6 mm (it’s problematic to pull it onto the plug, but with a larger size it will be a more flimsy design).
Cut off a piece of tube of the necessary length (with the calculation from the beginning of the wire and to the edge of the insulation damage, with a margin of a centimeter). Gently we put the tube on the connector, fix it with hands or tape.
After warming over any hot object: a hotplate of an electric or gas stove, a lighter, a gas burner. Be careful: heat-shrinkable material, like wire, does not tolerate high temperatures and, especially, open fire. There is enough hot air rising above the flame. On the output we get a restored cable.
The manual is written based on one curious clip, in the comments under which it was found out that the population of Russia is either unfamiliar with heat shrinkage, or did not intend to apply it not for its intended purpose.
