How-Old.net determines the age from the photo

How-Old.net does not yet pretend to be an accurate instrument and exists rather as a free entertainment project. Visitors upload their photos and share the results to impress friends, or amuse them – when the service is wrong. But at the heart of How-Old.net lies the capacity of Azure cloud platform, and its algorithms are constantly being improved.

The site is convenient to use both on the computer and on the mobile device. The developers added a few sample photos of smiling people, on whose faces you can try the accuracy of determining the age. You can also experiment with images of celebrities or, of course, use your own pictures. Microsoft claims that it does not store downloaded photos.

As for the accuracy, in my case, out of ten test shots, the algorithm was able to correctly determine the age for only four of them. But the error of the service was small: the robot added or missed only 2-3 years.

Microsoft did not limit itself to the site and added support for the technologies that stand behind How-Old.net, in its own mobile application Sprinkles. This program is able to determine emotions and impose on the faces of users decorative elements like headdresses and masks. Alas, while Sprinkles is only available for iOS devices connected to the US App Store.

It is worth noting that this is not the first implementation of such an idea. For example, the cameras of some Xiaomi smartphones have long been able to determine the age and sex of a person from a photograph.

You can also find a huge number of applications with similar features on Google Play and the App Store. But I was not able to find among them worthy. They either do not determine the age of the photo, despite the description, or they do it very badly.
