What is it for?
Recovery Mode – software that can reset the phone to factory settings, back up data, or download an update.
Manufacturers install the stock Recovery on devices. It has the necessary functionality without frills. If you plan to use official firmware and do not want to experiment with a smartphone, Stock Recovery will cope perfectly.
However, to install an unofficial firmware, you will need a custom Recovery, for example ClockworkMod Recovery or Team Win Recovery Project.
How to enable Recovery Mode on smartphones from different manufacturers
To switch to the recovery mode, you need to reboot the device using certain key combinations.
- Turn off the smartphone.
- Press and hold the power and volume down buttons until the menu opens.
- Select Recovery Mode using the volume buttons to navigate, and then confirm the action by pressing the power button.
- An image of an inverted “android” will appear on the screen with an exclamation point on the back.
- Press the power button together with the volume increase, after a few seconds, release the volume button, but keep holding the power button.
HTC
- Go to “Settings” → “Battery” and uncheck “Fastboot”.
- Turn off the phone.
- Press the power and volume down buttons.
- When the menu appears, select Recovery Mode using the volume rocker and press the power button to confirm the selection.
LG
- Turn off the phone.
- Hold down the volume and power buttons.
- When the LG logo appears, release the power button, and then press it again (do not release the volume button at the same time).
- Use the volume keys to select Recovery Mode, and press the power button to confirm the selection.
Motorola
- Turn off the phone.
- Press and hold the volume and power down buttons.
- Select Recovery Mode and confirm the action with the power button.
OnePlus
- Turn off the smartphone.
- Press and hold the power and volume down buttons.
- Select Recovery Mode using the volume rocker, and then confirm the action with the power button.
Sony
The first way
- Turn off your smartphone and then turn it on.
- When the company logo appears, hold down both volume buttons and click on the Sony logo.
The second way
- Turn off the smartphone.
- Hold the power button until you feel a couple of vibrations, then hold down the volume up button.
Samsung
- Turn off the device.
- Hold down the volume, power and Home buttons (in the Galaxy S8 this is the Bixby button).
Huawei
- Turn off the device.
- Press the volume up and power button until the screen lights up.
Xiaomi
The first way
- Turn off the smartphone.
- Hold down the power and volume buttons.
The second way
- Go to the Updater application.
- Click on the three dots in the upper right corner.
- In the menu that opens, select Reboot to Recovery mode.
ASUS
- Turn off the device.
- Hold down the power buttons and increase the volume until the Android logo appears.
