How to clean gold
There are several methods of cleaning gold jewelry at home:
- Soak. Ornaments should be placed in a special liquid, which can be made from what you have in the kitchen, in the bathroom or in the first aid kit. After a certain time, the plaque can be removed with a simple soft cloth.
- Polishing with improvised materials. Suitable if you need to return the product an amazing brilliance.
- Mechanical cleaning. Applicable if the contaminants are not amenable to previous methods. Use with care, so as not to damage the surface of precious jewelry.
Soak
- Salt. Dissolve in a glass of hot water 3 tablespoons of table salt. Put decorations there for the night, and in the morning rinse in running water.
- Dishwashing liquid. In a glass of water, stir a teaspoon of liquid detergent, add gold and put on a water bath. Boil the decorations for a few minutes, and then rinse the remnants of soap with water and wipe dry with a soft cloth.
- Ammonia alcohol + laundry detergent. Dissolve in a glass of water a teaspoon of ammonia and a tablespoon of powder and boil. In the hot solution place the jewelry for 2 hours, and then wipe them with a cloth.
- Liquid soap + hydrogen peroxide. A teaspoon of soap and 2 tablespoons of peroxide mixed with a glass of warm water. Put the gold in the solution for 20 minutes.
- Soda + foil. Dissolve 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda in a glass of hot water and pour into a container at the bottom of which lies a sheet of foil. Place decorations there for the night, and in the morning rinse them under the tap and wipe with a towel.
Polishing
- Velvet or felt cloth. Old, proven way. Just take a piece of suitable material and sit back in front of your favorite series: polishing can take quite a long time.
- Eraser. Soft white eraser will not only give a shine to gold, but also will remove the light raid.
- Vinegar. Dampen the cloth napkin in table vinegar and carefully decorate the jewelry.
- Lipstick. An interesting way for girls. Apply lipstick (preferably colorless) on a piece of cloth and walk through them on the tarnished gold.
- Beer and egg white. And this is more suitable for brutal men. Stir a little foam with protein, soak a cloth in the solution and rub ornaments.
- Onion juice. The principle is the same: moisten the juice in the juice and polish your favorite gold products. Do not forget to thoroughly rinse and dry the jewelry after the procedure.
Mechanical cleaning
Of course, you can buy a special paste in a jewelry store. But if you want to effectively clean gold without leaving home, cook this one easily from improvised materials.
Remember: to use for cleaning jewelry, aggressive abrasives, such as soda or sandpaper, do not, there is a great risk of damaging the surface of the precious metal. Because we will use softer and delicate mixtures.
- Dentifrice. A little powder, an old toothbrush and a little patience will be removed from gold by an old plaque.
- Toothpaste + petroleum jelly. Works just as well as tooth powder, but more neatly and gently.
- Chalk + laundry soap. Interrupt the chalk (suitable white from the set for children’s creativity) into powder and mix in equal proportions with rubbed soap. - Chalk + ammonia. Chop the chalk and mix with ammonia until a thick mass is obtained. Properly brush gold with a toothbrush or tissue napkin, and then rinse and dry.
How to clean gold jewelry with stones
Be especially careful with such jewelry. Remember that some precious stones require special care. For example, opal, turquoise or malachite can be scratched with abrasives, so forget about tooth powder, soda or salt. Ruby, pomegranate and topaz are sensitive to high temperatures, they can not be washed with hot water. And amber, pearls, coral or ivory do not like acids, alkali and solvents – it’s better to entrust cleaning to specialists.
If you are confident in your abilities, use the following methods of cleaning gold jewelry with stones:

How to clean white gold
White gold differs from the usual in that silver, palladium or nickel is added to it to obtain a light shade, and from the top it is often covered with rhodium. He protects the decoration and gives it a white sheen.
For these products hard methods will not do, but the following will be useful:
- Ammonia alcohol + hydrogen peroxide. Mix the two liquids in a 1: 2 ratio in the container. Put gold in the resulting solution for half an hour, and after rinse in running water and dry with a towel.
- Sugar. Dissolve 2 tablespoons of sugar in a glass of water. Soak the ornaments in a sweet solution for 10-12 hours: it will bring back their former shine.
How to Clean Matte Gold
Decorations are made of matte with a special polishing method. So, for cleaning such products do not use polishing materials, but only remove the visible plaque. To clean the matte gold, enough for a couple of hours to soak it in a 25% solution of ammonia, and then rinse in running water and wipe dry with a cloth.
What to do to prevent gold from getting dark
- Keep jewelry away from sunlight.
