The Top 10 Emerging Technologies for 2023 report, co-published by open access publisher Frontiers and the World Economic Forum, was released today. The report identifies the technologies expected to have the most positive impact on society over the next three to five years.
Curated by an international group of rowing experts, the technology was selected from nearly 100 contenders based on criteria including novelty, applicability, depth and performance. This year’s Knowledge Partner, Frontiers, worked with the Forum to identify experts from the broader research community to provide additional analysis of the technology.

For more than a decade, this report has helped business leaders, innovators, policymakers, and other experts across industries and sectors predict technological developments and understand the associated risks and opportunities.
The 2023 report expands its scope for the first time by incorporating a qualitative assessment of how each technology will impact people, planet, prosperity, industry and equity.
These ‘impact fingerprints’ are based on data collected from over 90 experts in 20 countries.
They provide an in-depth analysis of how technology is expected to impact society in the next five years. Academics were selected from Frontiers’ network of scientific journal editors, and industry leaders were selected from WEF’s Innovator Communities.
The Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2023 also includes a collection of transformation maps co-curated by Frontiers for each of the 10 technologies.
- flexible battery
- generative artificial intelligence
- sustainable aviation fuel
- designer phage
- Metaverse for mental health
- wearable plant sensor
- spatial omics
- Flexible neuroelectronics
- sustainable computing
- AI-based healthcare
Hosted on the Forum’s Strategic Intelligence platform, the map provides deeper insight and context into how the technology connects to other topics on the global agenda, as well as highlighting the latest articles on the topic from trusted sources. A total of 15 Frontiers journals contributed to the report, including:
- Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence
- Frontiers in batteries and electrochemistry
- Frontiers in Cell Signaling
- Frontiers in Chemical Biology
- Frontiers in Computer Science
- Pioneer in Energy Efficiency
- Frontiers in Fuel
- Pioneer of Lab on a Chip technology

- Frontiers in Microbiology
- Frontiers in Plant Science
- Frontiers in Systems Biology
- The frontier of virtual reality
The report was presented at the World Economic Forum’s 14th Annual Champions Meeting, Tianjin, China, June 27-29, 2023. Returning to the Forum’s “Summer Davos” tradition, the meeting brought together: Global leaders from business, government, civil society, international organizations, as well as innovators and academia gathered together. This year’s theme is ‘Entrepreneurship: The Driving Force of the Global Economy’.
Frederick Fenter, Editor-in-Chief of Frontiers, who has played a key role in this collaboration and is leading several sessions in Tianjin, said: We are positioned to accelerate the research and innovation cycle, including business and industry leaders.
This report and sessions over the coming days will raise awareness of 10 technologies that promise breakthroughs, important new products and services that will benefit us all. We look forward to our continued collaboration with the World Economic Forum as we continue to build bridges and open dialogue between key players in research, industrial innovation and policy-making.”
Jeremy Jurgens, Executive Director of the World Economic Forum and Director of the Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, said: “New technologies, if designed, scaled and scaled, can disrupt industries, grow economies and improve lives. And it has the power to protect the Earth.
Deployed responsibly. We hope this year’s report will be a powerful tool for business leaders and policymakers to unlock the transformative potential of emerging technologies and shape their inclusive adoption.”
