How best to connect to a smartphone in modem mode

One of the magic functions of smartphones based on iOS and Android is the ability to work as a modem. This option is simply indispensable in the case when you need to very urgently go online from your computer, and Wi-Fi is not around. Obviously, in this mode, the battery life of the mobile device will inexorably decrease, so we will consider various ways to connect to a smartphone in modem mode and choose the best one in terms of power consumption and quality / data rate.

How best to connect to a smartphone in modem mode

So, the smartphone allows you to connect to it in three ways: via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and also USB.

Wi-Fi

This method of connection provides a high speed connection and allows you to connect to the smartphone several devices at once. Thus, you can “treat” the Internet to all your friends. At the same time, the creation of a Wi-Fi access point on a smartphone requires preliminary configuration of access parameters. Another nasty thing: the habit of many smartphones to turn off Wi-Fi during the transition to a “sleep” mode, and in general the stability of such a connection can not be called ideal.

Bluetooth

Connecting via Bluetooth is only possible for one device, so this is the ideal wireless option “for one person.” The connection is actually automatic, and the connection protocol via Bluetooth provides an acceptable level of security. A very important point: Bluetooth is more efficient in terms of energy saving. With this type of connection, the smartphone will last longer. The weakest point of Bluetooth is bandwidth, however, given the realities of our harsh cellular operators, it is unlikely that many have unlimited mobile Internet rates without speed limits, but even if there is, then tell me honestly, what is the download speed over 3G?

USB

Classic and one of the most ancient ways to connect, but it’s far from the worst. With this connection, the user receives a high data transfer rate and simultaneous charging for the mobile device. Modern laptops and motherboards for desktop computers also offer special modes, in which the speed of charging a smartphone via USB is significantly increased. With all the advantages described, USB is still a wired connection, which puts it in the bottom line in terms of mobility and convenience. Nevertheless, if you are currently working in a comfortable environment (there is at least a table), then this connection will not interfere.

The result

With a combination of indicators of simplicity, convenience, mobility and energy saving combined with a low signal reception rate in 3G networks, Bluetooth wins with Wi-Fi and USB. Your opinion?
