The range of frequencies for working Wi-Fi is divided into 12 channels (in some countries there are 13 and even 14). Therefore, when several devices operate on the same channel, they begin to interfere with each other, which leads to a mutual decrease in the speed and stability of the communication. The matter is further complicated by the fact that, on its channel, the router actually grabs two more channels on the left and two channels on the right. Your task is to configure your router to work in the most free range. It is not difficult to do this.
1. Download and install inSSlDer. It will help us to determine the free channels in your environment. The program is free, works on all versions of Windows.
2. Run inSSlDer. After a short scan, you will see something like this:
Here we are primarily interested in the numbers of channels occupied by competitors, as well as overlapping band maps. You need to know which channel is free. Ideally, it is necessary that your new range does not overlap with neighbors’ networks. In my case, as you can see, this is rather difficult.
3. Open the settings of the router in the browser and change the channel. Usually it is enough to enter in the address bar 192.168.1.1.
If you have a different address, it’s easy to find out. Press Win + R, in the window that appears, enter the command cmd. A terminal window opens where you need to enter a command ipconfig. Here is the value of the parameter “Default gateway” – this is exactly what we need.
4. In the control panel, find the option to change channels. Usually it is located in the network settings (Wireless Settings). Some routers have an option “Auto”, which allows them to independently look for free channels. For all the others, it is recommended to set this parameter manually, specifying the channel that you found using inSSlDer.
5. Reboot the router and reconnect your computer to the network so that the settings made take effect.
Just want to make a reservation that these tips do not always help and not everyone. You may need to experiment with different channels. However, very often this method helps to increase the stability and speed of your connection, so it’s definitely worth trying.
If you still opened the router settings, do not forget to check its security, as described in this manual!
