How to change spoiled bills and coins

Where to go with a damaged bill?

In any bank that operates in Russia. Exchange of spoiled money is made by all institutions registered in our country and having state accreditation, including commercial ones. They must exchange the damaged bills absolutely free of charge.

This is spelled out in the Instruction of the Bank of Russia of December 26, 2006 No. 1778-U “On the signs of solvency and the rules for the exchange of banknotes and coins of the Bank of Russia”.

What banknotes exactly will be exchanged?

Have uncritical damages: contaminated, worn, torn, having rubbed, small holes, punctures, foreign inscriptions, stains, impressions of stamps. And also those who have lost their corners and edges.

Such banknotes should be accepted not only in banks, but also in stores.

And if a big piece is torn from the bill?

The bank will accept a bill that has kept at least 55% of its original area. Also, exchange a banknote glued together of two or more pieces. An important condition: one of the components must be more than 55% of the original area.

In addition, the bank must accept a bill, glued together from two fragments of different banknotes. But here there are a number of nuances:

  • Fragments must be of the same denomination.
  • They should differ from each other in graphic design (that is, when the bill is glued from two identical pieces, it will not work).
  • Each fragment should occupy not less than 50% of the original area of the banknote.

Will I receive damaged coins?

Yes. Exchange is subject to coins that have even serious damages – bent, flattened, having holes and traces of cutting, exposure to high temperatures and corrosive environments. But even on the coins that have been melted and changed, the denomination and belonging to the Bank of Russia should be visible.

And if in the case of banknotes 55% of the initial area is enough, then a coin that is suitable for exchange should retain at least 75%.

What bills and coins will not be exchanged for anything?

  • Banknotes, painted with substances that were intended to prevent theft during their transportation and storage.
  • Having a typographical inscription “Sample” or “Test”.
  • Retired (for example, those that were printed in 1995. They ceased to operate in 2002).
  • Having less than 55% of the area (or, in the case of two different banknotes glued together, less than 50%).
  • Those that do not see important inscriptions: face value, series and number, belonging to the Bank of Russia. It is important that at least some of the signs remain.
  • Denominations that completely lost the inscriptions on one of the parties.

Are there any restrictions in the amount to which you can exchange damaged bills?

No. You can bring any quantity of banknotes for exchange. Money employee of the bank will give out cash or transfer them to your current account. Do not forget to bring your passport to the bank.

What if I washed money with things?

The money is made of special paper, which is applied fairly persistent paint. Therefore, most likely, after washing the bill only becomes a little lighter.

The washed banknote should be dried correctly. To do this, put it on a sheet of white paper, spread it well, cover with another white sheet and put a thick book on top. The sheets will become wet, so change them several times, until they dry completely.

Does the bank exchange damaged foreign bills?

Yes, but not in all banks. Each institution sets its own currency exchange rules. Somewhere they accept banknotes only with minor damages, in other places they will not take banknotes glued together from three or more fragments.

In addition, each bank sets its commission, so you are unlikely to get the equivalent of the denomination of the banknote.
