Like on the Mac through QuickTime Player to record screencasts – with sound

Create a video of what is happening on the Mac screen is almost as easy as taking a screenshot. For this, in the composition of OS X and the program suitable is available – QuickTime Player. True, there is one catch: the sounds that during the recording publish the application, will not be recorded – in the captured file you will only have a picture. Lyap is very annoying, but it’s easy to fix.

This is the second time that Apple surprised me with a strange restriction in my software. You can, of course, take a third-party “screencast scribbler”, but personally I prefer to squeeze out of the regular software maximum. Add sound recording for QuickTime Player in just four easy steps.

1. Download Soundflower

This is a free system extension that provides more flexible configuration of the exchange of audio information between Mac applications. Download the zip archive with the distribution kit, mount the DMG image and install Soundflower on your Mac.

2. Redirect sound from the audio output to Soundflower

Open “System Settings” and go to the module Sound. On the tab Exit instead of the port Headphones select Soundflower (2ch). Actually, this is enough to now QuickTime Player recorded a video screencast with sound.

There remains one more big one: now the sound will not be heard during the recording. ???? Fortunately, and this is fixable.

3. Turn on the sound for monitoring during recording

Via Launchpad, run the Soundflowerbed utility (it was installed with Soundflower) – in the menu bar, next to the clock, you will see the icon of the eight-leafed flower. Click on this icon, and in the first section of the appeared menu, under the item Soundflower (2ch), select the command Built-in Output.

4. Configure the screen recording settings

The system is ready, now it only remains to deal with QuickTime Player. As the source of the audio signal, the program allows you to receive only a microphone and a line input. The value of the expansion of Soundflower is that it can “pretend” a microphone that sees QuickTime!

Connect sound to QuickTime Player

In the main menu of the program, select the command FileNew image recording on the screen (or press the ^ ⌘N keys). In the QuickTime Player window that appears, click the small arrow to the right of the recording button, and in the menu Microphone select item Soundflower (2ch). Everything, you can start recording – all the sound that different programs will publish at this time, QuickTime Player will fix. ????

Schematically the whole process can be depicted in the form of such a simple infographics:

Sound applications when recording screencast via QuickTime Player

In the first part – the standard process of recording screencast through QuickTime Player: during recording, the sound is heard, in the final file – silence. Then we install Soundflower – and during the recording we do not hear anything, but in the final file all the sounds will already be available. Finally, after duplicating the sound stream from Soundflower to Soundflowerbed, we turn on the sound and during the recording of the screencast.

And the main question to Apple: was it so difficult to integrate this functionality into QuickTime Player itself? ????
